Ravens vs. Jets – Another Look at the Day.

PressBox is a small company and we do a lot with only a few people. It was a bit crazy to open a Ravens gameday bar. (The Stoli Touchdown Zone – open before every home game.)  Well, maybe not too crazy.  The Stoli Touchdown Zone had over 400 visitors yesterday before the Ravens and Jets hit the field.  It never ceases to amaze me how into gameday our Baltimore fans are.

Some other observations about the Ravens/Jets Game:

  • Ravens fans need to calm down.  There were no fewer than 4 fights within 10 yards of my seats.
  • I still can’t stand the new fight song… please go back to  Jump Around by House of Pain.
  • I was handed a great beer coozie at our tent party.  On one side was a picture of Ray Lewis the other side had these words: “When the boogeyman goes to bed, he checks his closet for Ray Lewis.”  I even laughed typing that!
Enjoy the week and the Ravens victory!

Belichick to Ed Reed: “You’re the greatest free safety I’ve ever seen play this game.”

I think it’s very cool that in the new NFL Films documentary, “The Education of a Coach” Patriots Coach Bill Belichick tells Ed Reed: ““You’re the greatest free safety I’ve ever seen play this game. You’re awesome.”  Check the whole story from the New York Times out here.  And while I’m on the subject, check out this interview PressBox did with Bill Belichick earlier this year.

T-Sizzle Quote “His ass belongs to me…”

One of the greatest post game quotes of all time.  Terrell Suggs on Big Ben Rothlisberger:  ”His soul belongs to God but his ass belongs to me!”  See the video: T-Sizzle – \”His ass belongs to me!\”

I posted my last blog 4 months ago… confirming what I said last winter – I’m a pretty lame blogger!  That said, I’m gonna give it another whirl.  Besides, the Grand Prix, new Terps football Unis, Stevenson football and most of all the Ravens victory over Pittsburgh has me all fired up about the state of Baltimore area sports again!!  Some quick observations:

  • I think the Terps uniforms are great!  Even if I didn’t, I would be glad to see the University of Maryland breaking the boring NCAA mold a bit.  Now maybe some red turf to play on?
  • There were fewer Terrible Towels than I have ever witnessed at M&T Banks stadium this past Sunday.  I did however see a record number of idiot Ravens fans harassing Steelers faithful.  Why does beer make these people think they are on the field?
  • On the same note, here is a video that I think is a riot – taken by yours truly in the men’s room at last year’s Ravens / Steelers debacle.  Baltimore fans certainly are patriotic! Ravens Fans Sing Anthem in Bathroom
  • I thought the Grand Prix was very cool and I suspect it will be much improved from an administrative perspective next year.  The biggest surprise of the event? Almost no traffic downtown on Saturday and Sunday!
  • Finally, Stevenson Football.  From what I understand they are the only University level football start-up.   If they operate anything like Stevenson Lacrosse they will be winning in an exciting fashion in no time!  (O0ps – wait. They won their home opener in overtime 46-40!  See, I was right!)
Go Ravens!

Of Caps and O’s

I’m watching the Caps in the 3rd period of a great 1-1 tie game, with my eldest son on the couch next to me.  As we watch, the scroll on the screen shows us that the Orioles just lost their 7th game in a row.  My son has yet to see a winning Orioles season.  He is a Caps fan.  I hope, for his sake, the O’s start to turn it around soon.

NFL Lockout Day 30?

Well, I think it is day 30 of the lockout.  I’m really not sure – I’ve stopped counting.  It’s been easy to lose count.  Last weekend was an amazing time for local sports fans.  Saturday alone included a Caps overtime win, great local college lacrosse, an amazing game saving catch in the 9th by the Oriole’s Nick Markakis and of course the NCAA Final Four.  Sunday was a treat with the Big City Lacrosse Classic where our Blue Jay’s beat a strong UNC team in the final two minutes.  And, for purposes of our discussion, I am including Monday as a weekend day because it was O’s Opening Day and that qualifies as a holiday!  On Monday the O’s won and I went right into watching the NCAA championship game from a local bar.

Maybe the NFL has been too much of a distraction.  Maybe the lockout puts things in perspective.  $100 per ticket, $40 to park, $25 for food and drink – times 4 = $540.  Times 10 games equals $5,400… on the cheap side.  That is nice vacation.

NFL Lockout – Day 18

I’m not sure about you but I have not paid the Ravens yet.  I love the Ravens.  I appreciate the owner.  But I can’t borrow a beer from them and pay later.  They should not be able to take my money and not provide a service.  There is no league right now.  If there is no league do they have a contract where they can demand payment?  I have no clue what the legality is – but I know I’m not paying yet.  (I also know they can’t take my PSL away until sometime in June.)  If there were a fan Union or Association would it have highly paid lobbyists and attorneys looking out for us?  Just a thought.

No NFL – Day 12

Inspite of the lockout I am proud of a Raven.  Tom Zibikowski is having his second pro fight in AC this weekend.  He probably would not be able to fight if under contract with the Ravens.  He is good.  Watch it if you can.  Here is a link to his first pro fight in 2007.  I’m learning that maybe I paid too much attention to the NFL.  Has anyone tuned in the NFL Network recently?  If so I would be interested to know what they are talking about.  You are aware that each month, part of your cable bill goes to the NFL?  Is it worth the monthly cost now?  Hmmm.

NFL Lockout… What do I do now?

Okay, I have not blogged in 2 months or so.  Call it my vacation.  Once the Ravens lost to Pittsburgh (again), I just lost the desire.  Then, this morning, I woke up and noticed they snuck the NFL lockout in, right under my nose!  Somewhere between the SI Swimsuit issue and the tip off of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, it really happened.  I know, I know, it’s been all over the news.  I’ve been following the developments.  I guess I was just denying the situation.  At this point in the past, I have found myself checking our draft predictions, paying attention to the combine and even reading about the pro day workouts.  Not this year.  I guess I’m wondering if my symptoms are common.  I just don’t seem to care as much.  I’m finding that I can replace my passion for year ’round football with any number of things.  From a sports perspective, it’s lacrosse and Caps hockey.  Then there is the crazy idea of more time with my kids!  It also occurs to me that maybe the fans should have more of a say…. maybe even a seat at the table in some way.  After all, we finance the entire NFL operation.  Now that I think about it, maybe season ticket holders should get a small credit for poor play, if the players don’t get all of their OTA’s and training camp time.

So, while I pout and rant a bit – I am also going to post my alternatives.  Some ideas of things to do in the time that was perviously consumed by the NFL.  Maybe I will end up not really needing the NFL at all.

Ravens /Steelers – It’s On!

I am more excited for today’s Ravens / Steelers game than any game in recent memory – at least the last several years.  Mostly I want to silence the towel waving Pittsburgh faithful.  A friend just texted from a Lowe’s in Northern Virginia, where wearing a Ravens jersey brought an onslaught of Steelers fan vitriol.  The Steeler nation is well represented everywhere, it seems, leading me to one conclusion:  Nobody wants to work or live in Pittsburgh, so they move to a better place but keep holding onto the towels and black jerseys.  Blech.

Ravens, please win for me.  I want the obnoxious Pittsburgh fans silenced, even if only for a few months!
